Talaria brakes, pads & discs
These machines are heavy for their size and quick for their weight, and regenerative braking does far less of the work than people expect on a steep descent. Brakes are a consumable here, not a fit-and-forget component.
What to know about Talaria brakes
- Replace pads in pairs. Always both pads in a caliper, and check the disc while you are in there. A worn disc chews new pads quickly and the saving is false.
- Check disc thickness, not just pad depth. Discs wear too, and a disc below its minimum thickness will overheat and warp. It is a 30-second measurement with a vernier.
- Do not rely on regen. Regenerative braking helps and it is pleasant to use, but it fades as the pack approaches full and it will not hold you on a long steep descent. The friction brakes are doing the real work.
- Bed new pads in properly. A series of moderate stops from moderate speed before you ride hard. Skipping this is why new pads sometimes feel worse than the ones they replaced.

Talaria brakes questions
- How often do Talaria brake pads need replacing?
- Far more often than on a bicycle and about as often as on a gas dirt bike of similar weight. Riding style and terrain dominate — steep descents and heavier riders wear pads quickly. Inspect them rather than working to a mileage figure.
- Why do my brakes feel spongy?
- Air in the hydraulic system, usually. Bleeding the brakes fixes it. If it returns quickly, look for a weeping seal at the caliper or master cylinder rather than bleeding it again.
- Can I upgrade the brakes on my Talaria?
- Yes, and it is one of the more worthwhile upgrades if you ride steep terrain or are a heavier rider — larger discs and four-piston calipers both help. Check caliper mount spacing and disc diameter against your model before ordering.
