Electric Dirt Bike Maintenance: The Basics
The short list of things that actually need attention on a Sur-Ron or Talaria, how often, and which parts you will need.
Updated 2026-08-09
There is no oil to change, no air filter and no spark plug. That is real, and it is one of the pleasures of an electric machine.
What remains is everything mechanical — and instant torque is hard on it.
Every few rides
Chain tension and lubrication. This is the number one item. Instant torque accelerates chain and sprocket wear, and a loose chain will damage more than itself. Check after any wet or muddy ride.
Tire pressure. Cheap, quick, and it changes how the bike handles more than most riders expect.
Bolt check. Vibration loosens things. Axle pinch bolts, sprocket bolts, handlebar clamps.
Every few months
Brake pads. Inspect thickness. Replace in pairs, never singly.
Suspension. Look for oil weeping past the fork seals. Weeping seals will become leaking seals, and leaking seals ruin a ride.
Annually, or after a hard season
Wheel bearings. Lift each wheel and check for play and roughness. Replace as a set.
Full fastener torque check against the figures in your owner’s manual.
Battery care
- Store at partial charge, not full and not empty.
- Keep it dry and above freezing.
- Do not leave a pack on the charger for weeks at a time.
- Let a pack cool before charging after a hard ride.
Batteries are the most expensive component on the bike. Treating them well is the highest-return maintenance you can do.
A note on modifications
Aftermarket controllers and derestriction will generally void your factory drivetrain warranty. We sell some of these parts and we will tell you honestly what they do — but you should go in knowing the trade.

Frequently asked
- How often should I adjust the chain?
- Check tension every few rides and after any wet or muddy session. Chain and sprocket wear is the single most common maintenance item on these bikes.
- Do electric dirt bikes need less maintenance than gas?
- Less, but not none. There is no oil, no filter and no spark plug, but the chain, brakes, suspension and bearings wear exactly as they do on a gas bike — arguably faster, because the torque is instant.
- How should I store the battery?
- Store at partial charge rather than full or empty, somewhere dry and not subject to freezing. Avoid leaving a pack on the charger for weeks.
